I received a copy of Pr1me of Life by P. D. Bekendam from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Ben used to be a cardiothoracic surgeon before he suddenly abandoned his career and became a janitor at a retirement facility. Now, other than dealing with minor problems such as an unhealthy obsession with prime numbers, an inept boss, and a feud between two cantankerous retirees, he lives a relatively stress-free life. There is even hope for romance when an attractive podiatrist shows an interest in him. But it is not long before his past catches up with him and his carefully protected world begins to unravel.
This was an interesting book. Ben is something else. He has a unique way of dealing with stressful situations - he runs from them. He also likes prime numbers and hates the number 4. For the last 3 years Ben has been the janitor at Heritage Gardens retirement facility. He likes the life he's decided to lead and has pushed the past behind him. As time goes on he starts to think of the retirees at Heritage Gardens as family. When Jerry, aka The Professor, takes Ben under his wing and tries to lead Ben to God Ben does what he does best - run. Since Ben lives on the grounds at Heritage Gardens he can't run far, but that doesn't stop him.
